Changing social norms
Creating a supportive social climate for growth
The Matzmichim Academy operates through a systematic, data-driven model for change that has proven effective in improving group climate. Grounded in a sociological approach, the model focuses on shifting group norms through Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and specialized facilitation methods.

Building on this model, we develop targeted responses each year to address complex challenges across Israeli society, including reducing aggression in classrooms and youth groups, addressing racism, fostering connections across diverse communities, promoting gender inclusion, strengthening resilience in times of crisis, and cultivating positive leadership.

The field is our laboratory
The Matzmichim model has been shaped
by a rich interdisciplinary foundation,
drawing on insights from multiple fields, including:

-
Nonviolent conflict resolution (AVP)
-
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
-
Restorative practices (IIRP)
-
Reputation-based aggression (Prof. Faris, UC Davis, USA)

This theoretical foundation is combined with extensive field experience, including work with thousands of groups and hundreds of thousands of participants. Our ongoing engagement with diverse populations serves as a living laboratory, enabling us to continuously refine, adapt, and strengthen our methodology.

Shifting Group Norms
Raising awareness of the personal and collective impact of harmful norms
Activating the silent majority to challenge harmful behaviors and make them socially unacceptable
Encouraging and strengthening positive leadership through meaningful positive experience
Building the understanding that change is both possible and worthwhile, and fostering the group’s willingness to take part in it
Embedding a shared group commitment that supports sustained norm change
